Tran disciplinary Theme: How the world works Central Idea : We can understand more about materials by exploring them. Lines of Inquiry : · Materials around us. · How we can use materials. · How materials can change. Tuning into the new unit was done through a story “Three little pigs” wherein the students watched the video. They were later given pictures of the different houses shown in the story and were asked to explore and write their understanding of materials. Students went for a nature walk around the school and identified the things around them that were made of different materials. Later they brainstormed in a group and discussed various properties of the different materials. Students were also engaged in an interesting activity wherein they sorted natural and man-made materials. In their Art classes, students of grade 1 integrated ‘materials’ into their current unit, by inquiring into the different mediums of art like- pencil colours, oil pastels, wax colours, plastic crayons, poster colours and watercolours. They also observed different art materials like- pastel sheet, kite paper, cartridge sheet, fluorescent paper, chartpaper and newsprint sheet. Students also inquired into the technique of mix media art and observed some artwork that had been done using this technique. For their English classes, students were assessed on their understanding of verbs through a formative assessment wherein they had to write verbs by looking at the picture pasted in their process journals and make few sentences related to the picture using those verbs. They further honed their thinking skills through a picture sequencing activity wherein they marked each picture in the correct sequence and wrote what each picture depicted. They were also assessed on their spellings with a spell bee and wrote sentences with spell bee words. During Math classes, students demonstrated their knowledge of 2D shapes through a formative assessment wherein they had to identify shapes, mention number of sides and vertices. Students were introduced to 3D shapes like sphere, cube, cuboid, cone and cylinder through an activity by speaking about the shapes kept in a tray. They also watched a visual presentation for further understanding. Students also related the shapes with real life objects present in their classroom.Students wrote their understanding about 3D shapes followed by a task sheet in the process their journals. In Hindi ab-initio class students played a game where they followed the instructions in Hindi and learnt new words. They also learnt numbers and colours in Hindi. For their Hindi lessons, students viewed a video on the story of ‘Imandaar Lakadhaara’ and picked up new vocabulary from the story. They also revised ‘maatraas’. Students recited a poem on ‘Rasoi Ghar’ in connection with their unit based on the T.D theme ‘How the world works’. During their ICT classes, students had a great session on ‘One note’, an online documentation tool. They were very excited to notice their work instantly on the smartboard. What a great way to start cloud-based documentation skills with Grade 1 students! They also worked on their capitalization and spell check. In their Music classes, students were introduced to 'Arpeggio'. They practiced to sing the scales along with metronome. They modified their tempo according to the metronome beats as slow, fast and faster. They learned about musicals. They heard songs from some of the most famous musicals. They learned to sing - "Raindrops on roses”. In their P.E. classes students practiced stance for the game and holding the basketball. They practiced dribbling too.
