In conjunction with the 2nd line of inquiry ‘Food and its impact on our body’ students inquired about the food pyramid through educational videos and engaging class activities. Students learnt about the various food groups and importance of each group for a healthy and balanced diet. Students honed their research skills by exploring the benefits of different food items on the I-pads. A guest lecture on healthy eating habits and a balanced diet was conducted by Dr. Indu Gupta, students later wrote their reflection in their process journals. An assessment was conducted wherein students reflected upon their understanding of a balanced by planning a meal and incorporating all the food groups in adequate quantities. In their Hindi classes students watched a video based on a story ‘Badhne ka rahasya’ to understand the importance of food in our life and wrote ‘milte julte shabd’. Integrating the math concept of measurement with the unit, students reflected on the food pyramid and understood how much quantity of various food groups/food items are required for our body in order to stay healthy. Students enhanced their listening and comprehension skills by listening to a story and answering a task sheet based on the same. Students were assessed on their knowledge of nouns, punctuation and comprehension skills through a summative assessment. Students enhanced their reading and writing skills through read aloud sessions and attempting picture comprehension activities respectively. A take and talk was conducted and students spoke confidently about healthy food items. The ‘magic e’ words were practiced and a spell bee was conducted to assess the students on their spellings. While pursuing the concept of measurement, students were introduced to the standard units of measurement. They gained knowledge on concepts like length, height, width and measured different objects using a ruler. Students gained knowledge on the different units of measurements to measure length (millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer ), weight (gram, kilogram) and capacity (milliliter, liter). They explored and understood how to use the different tools of measurement like measuring tape, weighing scale and measuring cup. Students were assessed on the concept of addition through a formative assessment. Students practiced addition number bonds to 20 through number cards. In their Hindi classes, students read and wrote sentences using ‘aa’ ki matra. They were also introduced to ‘i’ ki matra and revisited swar. In their Hindi ab-initio classes, students revisited the vyanjan done previously. They were introduced to names of days of the week in Hindi. In their Art classes, students learnt how to draw fruits proportionate to the size of the given sheet. Now they are creating a still life collage by tearing and pasting coloured paper.
In their ICT classes, students continued to work in Microsoft Paint, exploring shape and fill colour tools to create illustrations. In their Dance classes, students did tapping, clapping and combinations to improve musicality and also a dance routine. In their Music classes, students practiced the western scales "DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO" in humming and various other techniques. This exercise is to help them to learn about voice modulation. They were also made to sing the song " DO A DEER". In their P.E. classes, students learned manipulative skills like obstacle course. In this activity there were different stations (hurdles, zigzag moving, running).

While pursuing the 1st line of inquiry – ‘daily habits and routines’, Inquirers of Grade 1 interviewed members of the school community to find out the extent to which healthy habits are being followed and which factor of health needs to be taken care of. They analyzed the collective responses of interview with the facilitator to find out about the various factors impacting health. In their formative assessment, students were given some scenarios and pictures related to various health factors and they had to illustrate and identify the ones which were ‘healthy’. Students were introduced to the food pyramid through a visual presentation to enhance their understanding of various food groups and the food items they are comprised of. Students enhanced their thinking and reading skills, through a picture sequencing story of ‘Baker Baking Cookies’. They enhanced their comprehension skills through a story ‘Go Away Floppy’ followed by a task sheet based on the same. Students practiced magic ‘e’ words to enhance their vocabulary through a comprehension passage. They also wrote similar words in their journals. They were assessed on spellings through a spell bee. The concept of ‘Measurement’ was introduced to the students through a classroom activity where they measured the distance from their desk to different places in the classroom using their feet this was followed by a classroom discussion to understand if the distance measured differs according to the size of their feet . The concept of standard and non-standard units of measurement was introduced through an interesting activity wherein the students were provided with different objects from the classroom to measure using their hands and a ruler. Students also watched an online story ‘How big is a foot’ and the terms length, hand span and foot span were introduced to them. They practiced addition through i-Pad games. In their Hindi classes, children enjoyed the poem ‘Aloo Bola Mujko Kha Lo’. They discussed the benefits of fruits and vegetables. Students shared the names of their favorite fruits and vegetables. An extempore activity was performed in which they picked one fruit or vegetable from the basket and spoke about it on their own. In Hindi Ab-initio classes, students were introduced to vyanjan ‘gha’, word ‘ghar’ and pictures associated with that vyanjan. They were familiarized with counting, vegetables, colours and names of body parts. They were also shown visual presentation on poem “laal tamatar bada mazedar’ in Hindi. In their ICT classes, students were given an introductory session on Microsoft Paintbrush to create illustrations. They learnt to type their names using text tool option which helped them to identify keys on the keyboard and also enhanced their mouse movement skills.
In their Drama classes, students were engaged in creative exercise where they created beautiful sculptures on their partner. One of the partner played sculptor and the other played clay and vice versa. In their Music classes, students learned a motivational song "a gift to you" and learned to sing the same on a karaoke track. They were also assessed for their singing. In their PE classes, students enhanced fundamental locomotor skills like dribbling, twisting and throwing. They performed health related fitness and played basketball. They also gave a formative assessment on basketball. In their Art classes, students inquired about the artist Paul Cezanne and observed his artwork. They also inquired into still life compositions and observed them. Students prepared a KWL Chart on Collage Making. In their Dance classes, students enjoyed practicing Jazz form of dance and understood the importance of style in Jazz. They were assessed on isolations and balancing to improve the clarity of steps. |
